At CarpetsPlus Color Tile, We Care About Child Safety
A child’s room needs to be more than pretty. Esther Sadowsky, principal of the New York City-based design firm, Charm and Whimsy and a specialist in designing rooms for children, likes to design “rooms that teach” by using words and numbers as part of the décor and, true to the name of her business, she often adds a big dose of whimsy, like the giant tree filled with animals for a room she is working on now. According to Sadowsky, “A child’s room should be fun, nurturing, practical and, above all else, safe.”
Hunter Douglas Helps Make Kids Rooms Safe
In the interest of safety, Sadowsky secures oversized furnishings to the walls to prevent them from falling over on a child. She makes sure that all drawers have stoppers and that ladders and guardrails are securely attached to bunk beds. Sadowsky pays special attention to window treatments. “Whenever possible I use the LiteRise® Touch System from Hunter Douglas,” she says. The LiteRise system eliminates the pull cords and lifts and lowers easily with a gentle touch on the bottom rail. This option is available on several of the most popular products from Hunter Douglas, the leader in window fashions: Duette® honeycomb shades, Country Woods® Collection wood blinds, Brilliance® pleated shades and Modern Precious Metals® aluminum blinds. Colorful and durable, Duette honeycomb shades are a great choice for a child’s room, one that Sadowsky often selects. In addition to being available with the LiteRise system, Duette shades are also offered with the UltraGlide® system, which is designed so that the pull cord retracts to a pre-set position so that it is less accessible to young children. UltraGlide® is exclusive to Duette honeycomb shades, Silhouette® window shadings and Vignette® Modern Roman Shades.
As a member of the United States Green Design Council and the board of directors of the American Society of Interior Designers, Theresa Bartolo, principal of the Bartolo Interiors Group in Boca Raton, Fla., is acutely aware of child safety issues. She points out that lung disease is the number one cause of death in infants less than one year of age. For children’s rooms, Bartolo advocates water-based low-volatile compound paints available from most major paint manufacturers and the use of natural materials for rugs and furnishings. She advises that good ventilation is very important and suggests that heavily textured fabrics be avoided as they trap dust. Bartolo likes to use wood or metal blinds and whenever possible specifies Hunter Douglas products with one of the many cord-free safety innovations they’ve pioneered.
The leader in safety at the window, Hunter Douglas was the first to respond to the safety concerns posed by the cording of window covering products with the introduction of the Break-Thru® Safety Tassel in 1993. This simple device, available on Hunter Douglas Modern Precious Metals aluminum blinds, consists of two small pieces that snap together to join the two ends of the cord. Should a child become entangled in the cords, the tassel is designed to break apart with minimal downward pressure, causing the cords to separate.
Other safety-enhancing options from Hunter Douglas include PowerRise®, a battery-powered remote control system that operates shades at the touch of a button, available on Duette honeycomb shades, Silhouette window shadings, Brilliance pleated shades and Vignette® Modern Roman Shades. The PermAssure® Safety Wand features a single control that replaces the chain and cord on select Hunter Douglas custom vertical blinds. For window fashions with continuous cord loop systems, the Hunter Douglas Cord Tensioner is a standard feature and helps prevent injury by keeping the cord loops taut using spring tension with a specially designed cord weight and bracket.
For an up-to-the-moment contemporary child’s room there is PowerGlide®, a remote controlled motorization system that operates with any standard 110V wall outlet to both traverse sheers and rotate the vanes on Luminette® Privacy Sheers, a unique window treatment that bonds sheer fabric facing to soft, rotating vanes that rotate to provide privacy, diffused light and UV-protection with a view.
With these innovative safety products, Hunter Douglas can bring you peace of mind as well as fashion for your children’s windows. This is something that as the father of twin four-year-old girls, Christian Huebner, owner of the San Mateo, Calif., design firm, Christian Huebner Interiors, Inc., is very aware of. “Whenever possible I specify Hunter Douglas window fashions for households with children, not only for their own bedrooms but also for kitchens, family rooms and all the other spaces where the children spend time,” he says.
