Just like selecting your hardwood or carpet floors, choosing the right area rug can change the entire aesthetic of a room. Not only do they make a statement in your decor, but they also provide comfort, absorb echo and noise, and give the room a pop of color or texture. Here are a few things to consider when picking out your perfect area rug.
Choosing an area rug that is too small for the space is one of the most common decorating mistakes made. A rule of thumb for most average rooms is to leave about 10 to 20 inches of bare floor between the rug and the wall. One way to decide which size is best, is to use painters tape to mark where you want the rug to stop and approximate the size from there.
There are so many different area rug styles to choose from, and it really just depends on your personal taste and decor. Rooms are not limited to the classic Persian or European style rug anymore. Instead, consider geometric shapes or lines for modern style homes or simple florals for a more country chic look. Consider other textures as well like shag or even faux animal print in an industrial setting. These patterns and styles can really brighten up a room and create a feeling of warmth or comfort.
Your lifestyle is another huge factor when choosing a rug. Children or pets can easily ruin a light colored area rug. If you plan to place it in a high traffic area, consider choosing a low pile rug (tighter and flatter fibers). These type of rugs are much easier to clean and maintain overtime. Going for a more comfortable luxurious look in an office or a bedroom? Try a high pile rug (looser and longer fibers). Just be aware of dirt and stains!
Some might say that color is the most important of these factors. The colors on your wall, your floors, and your decorative pieces need to coordinate with your new area rug. Designers use the 60-30-10 color rule when staging houses. About 60% of the room (or the largest pieces of furniture or color of your walls) should feature a dominant color, and 30% (an area rug or smaller furniture) should feature a secondary color. The 10% is an accent color used in the form of pillows, lamp shades, and flowers.
